As with Part Two, square off the end of the strip set and place ruler as shown. Make a cut, and remember to double back and trim that small angled tip at the top. That's your placement guide. Rotate the ruler to make the second cut. Then carefully trim that little angled corner as well. Cut 108 pairs of side triangles.

Generally Bonnie's quilts are bed size, at least full size. However, like the other anonymous poster said, it is part of the mystery. Some quilters make all the units 1/2 size if they want a wall hanging size quilt. With 12 yards of fabric needed for the quilt top, I think this quilt will be in the full to queen bed size.

For Part One, we'll be starting easy. Part One is half-square triangles! Make 36 sets of 4 half-square triangle units that measure 3 1/2'' unfinished and will finish at 3'' in the quilt. One neutral and one dark blue per set - but fabrics can vary from set to set. (144 half-square triangle units total.) You can use any method for half.

Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Mystery Quilting! I started Bonnie Hunter's annual mystery quilt on Black Friday. I had sworn off doing these for the past few years, but decided to give it another try this year.. I had clues 1-4 complete, had skipped over clue 5 and had clue 6 cut when Bonnie suddenly dropped another clue YESTERDAY! So I skipped.

Regarding the special fabric, Bonnie shows her piece early on in the intro.

Place the 1/4'' line point-to-point on the corner of the red tri-recs triangles and trim all the way around the outside of the quilt top for nice straight edges. If you aren't sure, please revisit the graphic for half-blocks above. It shows where to place the 1/4'' line. Take a "Victory Lap" around the outside edge of the quilt top, stitching.

Cut one red and one dark blue square 4 1/4''. Each pair of squares will yield 2 hourglass units. Place one red and one dark blue square with right sides together and slice twice from corner to corner with an X to yield 4 matched pairs of quarter-square triangle ready to sew. You will need 18 red squares and 18 blue squares to complete the 36.
