Plum was an accident. The Russians were trying to make black polymer and got the dye wrong and didn't realize it until after they'd produced a massive amount and got it out in the sun. At the time is was considered close enough and they just went with it. Plum was only a thing from around 86' to 90' before they got the dye right with "true.
